What is a MLM Help Desk Scam Alert and What it is NOT

In reviewing the comments we receive each time we put out a Scam Alert, I decided to explain a little on what these MLM Scam Alerts mean, and what they don’t mean.

I think to many times people feel we are some who being paid to report. We do not get paid period on any scam report, and to date we have not received a dollar from an company review we have done.

Our goal is to provide a Eagle’s Eye view of the company and opportunity. To many times people only hear the propaganda from the company or the person recruiting them into the company, without digging to fine out solid info.

As have a series of benchmarks we use to report on a company. If the company does not hit the benchmarks, we report.

So the next time you see a MLM Scam Alret… Remember it is an Alert! Take the info, use it to make an informed decision on joining a company or not.

  1. So that's my rant and my suggestion, Troy. I like you. You're feisty and you are fair minded and your purpose is good.

    All I'm saying is to be aware of the power you wield and only apply it with the addtion of opinion and tone if a company does something to deserve it.

    If you don't have enough information about a company to justify adding color to your reports then its time to simply show the grid without comment or take the time to chase down the facts before speaking. (cont. due to length)

    Well said as always. Now I may miss something but let me try and address just a couple of great items you bring up.

    1. Whether a company is just launching or been around doesn't determine if a scam alert is issued. We have reviewed and shared on several start up companies and they are listed under MLM Companies. Which be the way is far larger than the Scam Alerts. We really don't offer many scam alerts at all.

    2. There is no room in the law for a "start-up" or "pre-launch" to not have their ducks in order in the MLM industry. This is why it is so important to use the right consultants and attorneys and LISTEN to them in great detail. The greatest ideas, and visions can come crashing down, when the company does not take care of all the small details.

    3. You make a valid point on the power of the spoken word. And yes I have over the last few months taken a more pointed stance on the Scam Alerts. This is because of all the emails and phone calls I have received from men and women crying because they got caught up in the hype of what they thought was a great opportunity, just to be left with nothing.

    But, out of respect for you the next Scam Alert, I will take into consideration your advice.

    I find that your insight is very valuable both to me and the community here at the help desk. Thank you for caring about others as you do.

  3. I certainly want to be warned away from companies that are taking people for their money and their trust and I will come to the helpdesk as a part of my due dilligence.

    But just because a company is new should not make it land in the Scam Alert bin.

    Everywhere I go on the net its the same thing, let's generically call them the 'watchdog" sites. Someone starts a thead with some version of, "I just heard about this new company that claims to have ________. Are they a scam?" And the dogs pile on and the discussion is off and running down a track that it likely did not deserve to go.

    MLM Helpdesk has the potential class to not be one of the many that do that.

    A New Companies tab would insulate new companies from the guilt by association that subconsciously occurs by lumping them in with companies that have proven themselves to be BS. That's what seems would be most fair to me.

    Let's lift up innovators in the industry unless they've shown they deserve the opposite.

  4. Then we can look at it objectively and incorporate it into our own process of risk assessment and due dilligence without it being colored by any tone and word choice that would imply something being amiss that we should be warned to stay away from.

    If during the ongoing process of establishment and growth something comes to your attention that shows the company does something truly unscrupulous then they should be moved to the Scam Alert tab. Or if nothing turns up on the bad side place them under the MLM Companies tab as is fitting but to toss new companies into the Scam Alert bin simply because there is limited information on them during start up phase is not, in my opinion, the responsible use of journalistic power.   5. Is a company worthy of a Scam Alert simply because it doesn't have everything perfect at launch and you have limited information to go by?

    After all, just the word itself stirs up suspicion and you make a good point when you talk about the people who've discovered how to use it as a keyword just to get hits and appear at the top of the search engines. It's the latest thing for networkers to do a youtube post using the word scam along with the name of their company or product. Then when you watch they will tell you why its not. It works.

    I guess that word works to drive traffic to the helpdesk too. I can't fault you for that but here's what I would suggest: How about if you add a tab that is called New Companies where you simply announce without personal comment what criteria they match and what criteria they don't match on the scoring grid you talked about in the video?   6. Some of this probably can't ever be helped as there are people who thrive on rumor, gossip and scandal and like to take that ball and run with it. This is how stuff gets around that shouldn't be getting around because it has no basis in fact. I call these kinds of people the wolves.

    And I'm sure a lot of companies that you've written about in the past HAVE turned out to be scams. In fact I see a few on your current list that definitely deserve to be there.

    But do all new companies that are working to bring innovation to the industry necessarily deserve to be thrown to the scam hungry gossip wolves via the mechanism of "guilt by association?" (cont. due to length)

  7. Maybe it's wrong of me to expect you to supply only objective information without adding your own color to how you express it. After all, you are branding yourself our here in internet land and you certainly deserve to do that.

    I would only ask you to stay aware that what you say has impact in the world and when new companies are doing their best to launch and may not have all their ducks perfectly in a row in those early stages that you take that into consideration when you post that "they don't have this" or "they aren't doing that" in a tone that exploits your significant power to influence as it can have the effect of creating controversy where there really is none.

    As on online journalist you've got to know that people take what you say and interpret it as they will. What appears here at the helpdesk as a heads up that a particular company doesn't has have something in place, quickly appears elsewhere on the internet as, "Troy Dooly said that business was a scam."   8. Troy, that was a very good video and explanation of your aims here at the helpdesk and I agree with your philosophy in principle. I also give you a big thumbs up for not censoring comments.

    What's missing from your explanation however is the question of tone and choice of words when you publish a Scam Alert. Much can be implied with inflection and word choice that amounts to a communication that is NOT simply stating the facts objectively. This is where personality and personal opinion, even if not explicitly stated, clearly bleeds through. (cont. due to length)

  9. Well said, Troy. Unfortunately, our industry tends to attract a lot of scammers. I believe there are already enough outside detractors… FTC, AGs, disgruntled distributors, et al… (many with good reason) and it's always good to see a proactive approach from within the industry for self-regulation. I really appreciate how you compile all this data into a simple forum for all to easily make an informed decision. All the due diligence we do ourselves without outside intervention will go a long way to help keep MLM companies honest, distributors happy, outside intervention to a minimum, and can ultimately help to give the "MLM Industry" a better name.

    Discernment is a gift. Some have it and some don't . What I find great about gifts are ,everyone of us has our own special gift. How we use it and how we give it away is what truly counts. Its great to have a friend who cares enough to use the history of his experience in business to help those in need to think through and discern if the opportunity laid out in front of them is one that should be considered.
    Even this last week, I have received 27 e-mails giving me the opportunity to make money by writing down numbers. Ok ,for me it took all of two seconds to say, not for me. But I know by the amount of e-mails that some grabbed the opportunity and they are running with it.
    Plain and simple, your blog is a breath of fresh air that gives someone the opportunity to get another viewpoint. Actually many viewpoints as everyone who takes the time to contribute here helps others in one way or another. So a huge thank you to all, that have helped me to grow.
